The growing appeal for opening and sharing research data, mainly for reuse, implies conceptual discussions about the term “research data”, where there is little consensus, as disciplinary differences strongly influence in how they are understood. In general, they can be defined as products obtained through systematic investigation processes that included stages of collection, observation, experimentation, tests or similar procedures. Thus, the purpose of this article is to briefly reflect on the concept of research data and identify best practices recommended for their management. The study was carried out by conducting bibliographic research, in order to develop a theoretical framework. From there, practices linked to the research data management process in the context of University Libraries were outlined. In order to verify the coincidence of these practices with those already adopted by university libraries, were identified scientific publications that report initiatives aimed in promoting research data management practices, among which were selected for analysis 10 articles that describe data management practices of research in University Libraries of all continents.
